Texas has no blast furnaces, so every ton of slag cement in the state is either ground here from imported granules or imported already ground. All of it moves through Houston.
Two producers on TxDOT's slag cement list are physically in Houston, grinding imported granulated slag to cement fineness with truck, rail and barge loadout. This is the material Hasten supplies.

ASTM C989 grades slag cement by the strength a 50 percent slag mortar develops against a straight portland control.
At least 75 percent of control strength at 7 days and 95 percent at 28 days. The grade on TxDOT's list and the one most Houston mixes are designed around. This is what we supply.
At least 95 percent at 7 days and 115 percent at 28 days. Finer grind, faster strength, higher price. Worth it when early strength or high replacement levels are the spec. Ask and we will tell you what is available that week.
The grade on the invoice is not the whole story. Fineness, reported as percent retained on the No. 325 sieve, is where reactivity lives; a slag at 1 to 2 percent retained behaves very differently from one at 10 percent. SO3 matters on anything in contact with sulfate soil or water. Both are on the mill certificate. Ask for it before you commit.

TxDOT Item 421 allows 35 to 50 percent replacement and up to 70 percent in mass concrete. Commercial mixes commonly run 25 to 50 percent. Your mix designer sets it.
